Lottery Grant awarded to St Mary's
St Mary the Virgin Church, Stone was awarded a Lottery Grant to enable part of the ancient churchyard, now closed for burials, to be developed as a site for wildlife to create a 'living churchyard'. The grant has been made by Awards For All and was included within its announcement of December 2008 awards.
Work on the site, included the creation and ongoing management of a chalk habitat wild flower meadow and the installation of bird nesting boxes to encourage more wildlife into the area. The area has been enhanced by the removal of trees and shrubs that were damaging the historic boundary wall thereby reuniting the natural and historic elements of the churchyard. The North West Kent Countryside Partnership surveyed the churchyard and a management plan has been devised to enable the long-term management to reach its full potential. The Church has close links with Stone St Mary's Church of England Primary School who will be able to use the site's natural setting as an outdoor classroom. The churchyard is well used as there is a footpath passing through it and it is hoped that the many people using it will be able to enjoy the living churchyard as a quiet open space in the heart of the area. The churchyard dates back to the 13th century and has played an important part in shaping the history of the area. The path through the churchyard is a direct route from Greenhithe and the Worcester Park Estate to the historic village of Stone.
